A couple of weeks ago I was attending the annual NCC (National Construction Code) BCA (Building Code of Australia) information sessions and saw this well presented flow chart showing the ways to comply with the BCA that I thought I’d share.
There are two paths to comply with the BCA either by DTS (deemed to satisfy) or by an Alternative Solution. DTS methods are prescriptive, that is to say they are laid out by the BCA and quite often reference Australian Standards. Alternative solutions on the other hand can rely on evidence of suitability, verification methods, comparison or expert judgement, such as by a Level 1 Building Surveyor. Both DTS and Alternative Solutions share some commonalities, they both meet the Objectives, Functional Statements and Performance Requirements of the BCA, but can have very different outcomes.
The ABCB (Australian Building Codes Board) who are the authors of the NCC/BCA are once again pushing for more use of Alternative Solutions to innovate and come up with a better outcome whilst still complying with the NCC. If you are unhappy with a clause of the BCA contact one of our Building Surveyors and we can discuss coming up with an Alternative Solution to suit your needs, while ensuring a compliant outcome.
If you would like to discuss an alternative solution to the NCC/BCA please contact one of our level 1 Building Surveyors.
And remember with a free and competitive quote, you really can’t afford not to get in touch with our Building Surveyors to discuss your next job.
Due to constantly evolving legislation the information provided within this blog may no longer be valid. The advice given on this site is general in nature and does not take into account your specific circumstances. Please email one of our building surveyors to check what is right for you.
